Elena & Spero are two of those sweet souls. They are those people that you find and every conversation leaves you smiling, leaves you feeling happy. I have been looking forward to their wedding for months!!!!! Their engagement session was such a tease of what beautiful moments were to come on wedding day. They care so much for each other and the people around them. I just knew their wedding day was going to be thoughtful and family oriented.
When Elena and I started discussing wedding plans, she asked if I’d ever photographed a traditional Greek wedding before? I had not and was SO excited to have the chance. Culture and family history are very important to me and I know Elena & Spero felt the same way. We talked about the ceremony, what it meant, and I asked to come to the rehearsal so I could better understand the ceremony before the big day. It was amazing to learn all the different sections, and in such a beautiful church!
On the big day, everyone got ready at Hunt Phelan and the bride and groom opted to do a first look. Spero was so handsome and speechless when Elena turned him around. The wedding party was relaxed and goofy while we did pre-ceremony photos. Elena looked stunning in her lace dress (that had a secret) and her cathedral length veil.
The wedding ceremony was held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and had special meaning to Elena and Spero. Their moms introduced them through the church and they knew each other from afar growing up!! They both had so many memories from the church that the wedding could not have been held anywhere else. The church was beautiful and felt like we were somewhere away in Europe with its chandeliers and murals. (Elena and Spero’s wedding was the last one performed with this facade before the altar underwent a facelift. It’s crazy to think I got the last photos of it!!)
Back at Hunt Phelan for the reception, the guests were treated to Gus’ Fried Chicken and Central BBQ, both famous in Memphis. I had been warned by the bridesmaids about the Greek dancing that was coming up, and thanks to them, I knew where to stand for the best action shots. Greek dancing is so energetic (the footwork made me tired just watching) but I know everyone was having a great time. Different people took turns leading the dances and there couldn’t have been a more fun crowd.
Elena & Spero’s “big fat southern Greek wedding” was so much fun, and I’m very happy to share these photos with you.
Jessie and Shawn contacted me because they are GRADUATING!!!! Jessie said they were looking to do some individual photos and also couple’s photos because they’ve been dating for forever and don’t have many together…. YES, I’m your girl! I love “just because” photo sessions. In my book, there isn’t a valid excuse to not dress up, feel great, and hug on someone that you love. And that’s exactly what Shawn and Jessie got to do.
We met at Shelby Farms, and since this couple isn’t native to Memphis, it was only their second time to visit the park! I got to show them around while looking for locations and they brought their pup Sawyer to explore too. The great thing about Shelby Farms is how many backdrops are in one area AND bathrooms to change outfits.
We had the perfect overcast day and these guys knew how to rock their looks. I love Jessie’s curls (even though we had to fight the wind about flyaways) and the detail that she took picking out her jewelry. Shawn looked great in his jacket and told me in the beginning that he definitely wanted that to be one of his outfits. (I’ll never stop a guy from wearing a blazer btw, so classy.)
I had a great time spending the afternoon with this cute couple. They are so sweet and caring towards each other, which meant they needed very little direction from me behind the camera. Y’alls smiles are contagious and this “just because” couple’s session makes me so happy!!
I can NOT believe that Elly is graduating and headed to college. I remember the day she was born and how excited we were to have a new cousin. Now she’s driving and about to move out on her own! It doesn’t seem real.
Elly and her family made plans to spend Easter in the little gulf town of Seaside, FL. It’s been a favorite vacation spot for years, and Elly knows the place pretty well. For y’all that have not visited before, Seaside is the idyllic beach town with pastel houses, food trucks, and fiery sunsets. It really is a postcard place or somewhere you would see in a movie (The Truman Show was actually filmed here). There are just too many locations to choose from and not enough time to photograph them all.
I met Elly in the afternoon to go over wardrobe and make a plan using the best sunlight hours. We kept it shady in the beginning and close to their beach bungalow to make outfit changes easy and fast. Everywhere is reachable by bicycle, and it was fun just cruising around looking for the perfect locations. Seeing Seaside like a local!
We saved the best light for last and headed down to the water. Elly looked amazing and nailed every frame, it was hard to choose my favorites for this post! I know you’re grown up but I still can’t believe it. I wish you all the luck next year as you head to Samford (ps- halfway to the beach…..).
Welcome to the new home of Morgan Newsom Photography! It has taken a lot of work and thought to present my new brand the way that I’d like.
